Station Render

The right platform needs to be isolated to prevent the pole stretching.  And there's a linear gap between the main platform and lower rail platform (left)--could either move the camera over to the right or widen the lower platform.

Station - projection rendering

I created color and alpha files earlier in the week.  Tried setting up projection for background (middle shot) when I realized the Fit Type should be Match Camera Resolution, not Match Camera Film Gate (I'm currently using a Resolution Gate for the camera--just to be confusing).
I finally rendered a working projected background (top).

Station model

Completed model above, top.  [Saved trees as object file to insert later - they tend to bog down the program.]
The screen capture shows checking the normals before exporting object file.  I have to do this in order to work on models created in v2014 Maya outside of school - the school uses v2013.

Station - modeling progress

Pretty much done with modeling with exception of some overhead items and some wanted details.
Will work on getting into some 3D projection tomorrow.

Station - geometry

Learning more about how to utilize simple geometry.  Will etch in the detail using sculpt, vertex, face, etc.  Would like to finish up so I can go ahead and try placing the 3D cameras.

Station - modeling progress

Modeling still ongoing.  I'm not very good at sculpting, so I'm just going cube by cube for now.

The Station - modeling progress

Continued working on matte painting.  Isolated layers to ready for 3D modeling.
Matched color to "Unstoppable" scene:

Station grid

Tried working in Maya 3D modeling this evening.  Spent time with the instructor learning how to properly create a Maya project folder (somewhat like creating scratch disks for video).
Also worked from the text on how to create the projectionCamera and set the reference image properly so the objects don't pierce through.
Found difficulty in setting grid to the horizon because the matte painting isn't finished.
So here's the vanishing point grid I've added (above).  I would have shown my creepy cubes from Maya, but didn't save/render the project file correctly, I guess.

Sketch for 3D project

Sketch of idea for 3D modeling project - for Matte Painting final.

Acceleropa - retouch

Updates:
Added trees in foreground - 3D elements.
Added faint dirt trails from foreground and throughout background.
Tried matching tower leaves' color more appropriately.
Performed dodge on and around tower to create more sun weathered appearance (used dodge for trails).
Deleted rock from side of car.  Burned underneath.
Tried to grunge-up the car using rust-red-dream reference.
Added greebles to car.
Color matched planets to mountain range.
Leveled down extreme foreground to try to add more contrast.
Added human skull to midground (a little dab will do ya).

Acceleropa landscape

Performed some color matching for the midground and foreground.  Burned birds and extreme foreground.  Still need the vehicle and shadow cast from the tower.  Used the very first tower reference for the dark side of the tower.  Also added desert growth at the tower base.  Added more clouds using a cloud brush from:

Acceleropa with grid overlay

Value Study 3 - Acceleropa

Moved the large bird form down from in front of the tower.  Played with the desert horizon using a gradient with lower opacity.

Backstory - Acceleropa they call it.  It's post-apocalyptic 2401, and what little resource they got, they hoard it and protect it, even from the mutated birds.  If you make it into the canyon, you might be a friend of the Arid Zona Alliance.  They've managed to force the New California Republic to desalinate sea water, and New Vegas to finally cash in its chips.  Acceleropa, AZA, it's for the scorpibirds.  And that's just okay with them.  Yippee ki yay, feller.

Value Study 3 Reference and Palette

Scoured for reference and tried building a palette in line with vibrant desert colors.

Gridded Value Study 3

Using Value Study 3, created grids - one for the canyon and one for the sky using vanishing points.  Tried extending the canyon grid using the pen tool and stroke path.  Also used the pen tool for gridding the tower, and then added ellipses.

Value Study 2 of 3

Traced from the Book of Eli screen capture--link: This is an attempt at nuancing the post-apocalyptic setting with a little Los Angeles flavor by adding the palm tree and livery stable (under the coat factory).

Value Study 3 of 3

Value Study 3 of 3.  An attempt at sci-fi/fantasy mix.  Original background was of the Grand Canyon with tower--link: http://web.mst.edu/~rogersda/umrcourses/geo372/2005-03-31-359-Grand_Canyon-Desert_View_Watchtower-girls.JPG.  Used Alchemy to come up with moon, flag, weird birds and the ground junk.  The wacky looking truck is from the brain.
